This project, called “The ground beneath our feet/ Urban Horizons” is a photographic journey of the steps I take while travelling in cities around the world, taking photos of the urban grounds closest to my feet. I am looking at the patterns created by human traffic, weather and abuse of all sorts inflicted upon pavements and where pavement meets walls or other man-made surfaces. These are close up shots of the wear and tear, the grime and stains accumulated through which the wonderful accidental abstracts are ephemerally displayed. I am specifically attracted to the fact that although passed by countless people, these creations go completely unnoticed. The photos are generally printed on watercolor paper, formatted in 36×24 unframed. The similarities with my painted work are not accidental. Abstracted images are what stimulate me and Horizons have been a recurrent theme in my work, as I am drawn by the paradox of the visual emptiness that lies behind them and the richness of the matters that imprison the horizon line. That richness is to me like a supportive, comfortable nest in which I can let my imagination run wild when staring at the Horizon…In “Urban Horizons” I am having fun spotting new horizon lines close to the ground, lines that are dirty, damaged, soiled and ignored. Yet, there too imagination can go wild when re-framing these minuscule insignificant blights into vast spaces to meditate.
